to preview V.I.N.O. in action!
V.I.N.O. (Vocalists' Initiative for New Opera) was founded in 2008
by a devoted group of opera lovers
committed to the promotion of new work. The goal of the company is to
bring newly developed opera and musical theater of consistently high
quality to a much wider audience at a much lower cost. Plain and simple.
VINO takes a deep bow to those masters of yore, but devotes the bulk of
its efforts to promoting and supporting opera composers that are still
living, and who seek to continue the grand tradition of creating new works
for this classic and beloved art form.

The inaugural event of VINO was held on January 22nd, 2009 in New York
City. A partially staged reading/concert performance of The Monkey's
Paw, a new one-act opera by
Jonathan N. Kupper,
was presented at
Christ & St. Stephen's Episcopal Church
with a beautiful, catered reception immediately following. The
audience turnout was quite impressive indeed, and reactions were
overwhelmingly positive: some individuals even moved to tears (for new
opera?--imagine that!).
It was 'some enchanted evening' to be sure, as rewarding for VINO and its
performers as it was, hopefully, for the audience and all who attended
and/or contributed to the event in some way. But it was only the
beginning... In keeping with its ‘mode of operations’ and the inherent
purpose by which VINO functions, The Monkey’s Paw is now being
promoted to you, the larger audience: one comprised of not only opera
lovers, but the talented,
hard-working opera makers from all across this culturally needy nation of
ours.

It is this ‘larger community’ with whom VINO seeks to foster an
ever-growing relationship. By reviewing scores and/or recordings of pieces
the company has work shopped, and subsequently, considering the material
for your programming needs or a reading--either by your own organization
or that of a colleague--you help VINO to accomplish its larger mission: to
bring fresh, new, and (above all) deserving material before a much wider
audience; in particular, works that are musically accessible while at the
same time devoting ample attention to, and showing passion for, the art of
storytelling.
It is with such passion that we have all invested so much of our time &
efforts, our energies, ourselves in this labor of love... And VINO hopes,
in all humility, to do its part in bearing the torch that much further!
